The Salvation Army Just Action Conference Hamilton - 19th Sept 2024"Alcohol is ever present in our society and the marketing of it so well-funded and attractive that for many it is hard to appreciate the devastating damage it inflicts on our communities. The sophistication of wine, the mate-ship of beer and the utter necessity of alcohol for celebration is emphasised while the devastating related violence, crime and physical as well as mental health consequences are minimised and externalised to others – not me.In this context, some communities, especially those more marginalised, are involved in a struggle to reduce the harm that alcohol inflicts on their whanau. Sometimes it seems as if these communities are deliberately preyed upon with liquor stores, pokie machine outlets and loan sharks – a toxic mix that seems intended to maximise poverty, violence, family break up, debt, poverty, and addiction.The community needs to find its voice, recognise the harm that alcohol can do and hear what community advocates are doing and see what action we can all take to minimise the harm.That is what the Just Action Conference is all about – Voices for Change, Alcohol Harm and Community Action.
